The preparation and evaluation of a CVD/PAN carbon/carbon frustum are described. The thermal gradient infiltration technique has successfully yielded a matrix composed primarily of the desired rough laminar microstructure. Characterization of the composite includes thermal and mechanical properties as functions of temperature, as well as room temperature crystallographic parameters.
