Abstract

Introduction
Like previous years’ lists, biographies and related life stories continue to dominate this year’s output on East and Central Africa. An interesting twist to this trend is the increasing interest in what can be termed “biographies of places and institutions”. These are represented here by, among others, Kwani Trust’s Nairobi: An Exploration of a City by Photographers and Writers [see
A related trend under the auto/biographies category are childhood memoirs, most of which look back nostalgically at a gone era in the region’s histories. Among these are Christine Stephanie Nicholls’ A Kenya Childhood and David Webster’s Mishkid: A Kenyan Childhood. Two notable additions in this category are Zimbabwean writer Alexander Fuller’s Cocktail Hour under the Tree of Forgetfulness and Binyavanga Wainaina’s One Day I Will Write about This Place. Fuller traces her mother Nicola Fuller’s life across East and Central Africa while Wainaina’s long-awaited debut paints a powerful portrait of a Kenyan childhood in Nakuru – a rather underexplored landscape in the region’s literary canvas – against a backdrop of rapid cultural and political changes in the region. Another notable entry is Hannah Njenga’s I Am Human Too: Social Perceptions of Albinism, which is a timely reflection on the question of albinism, particularly given the depths of discrimination and fetishization of albinism in the region in recent years. Increasingly, too, the list continues to feature what can be termed “bio-profiles” in the form of collections of self-portraits of various categories “in their own voices”. This year, this trend is represented by Susan Wakhungu-Githuku’s Life Journeys: Conversations with High Achieving Men in Kenya and James Mwaura Wamuhiu’s The Widows of Africa: Daughter of Muti, and Christina Clark-Kazak’s Recounting Migration: Political Narratives of Congolese Young People in Uganda [see
The list also features several entries from old voices such as playwright Francis Imbuga’s The Return of Mgofu [see
For its part, the critical studies category suggests a wide range of concerns for the region’s literary scholarship, ranging from a rich special issue of
