Abstract
In this interview, South African author Ivan Vladislavić explores his relationship to his craft and visual art and his writing process. He speaks about his history as an editor of prize-winning South African books, how he balances his own writing with his “day job” as an editor and how he humorously weaves this work of the editor into his fictions. The interview examines his progression from short-story writer, through his prize-winning novels, to his most recent work, Portrait with Keys — a collection of 138 short texts on Johannesburg — which has brought him more prominently to the attention of British readers. He talks about the importance of expanding fiction from its traditionally accepted forms to exploring its infinite possibilities.
