An experiment to determine the relationship between levels of cigarette smoking,
persuasive communication, and attitude change showed outcomes quite different
from those predicted by theories of cognitive dissonance: attitude change was
significantly affected by the magnitude of persuasive communication, but con
sumption of cigarettes did not appreciably affect attitude change.
