Introduction: Globalization and Post-Apartheid South Africa

Abstract

The articles in this special edition all relate in diverse ways to the present incapacity of governments, especially the South African government, to execute internal reform programs that have traditionally been their preserve, but have changed in the face of global demands requiring the often scarce resources needed for such programs. One of the most important of these since the first democratically elected government came into power in South Africa has been the attempt to create greater equality, while at the same time leading the country successfully into the global era. The articles appearing here inform the reader of the state of progress made towards greater equality in South Africa in spite of the conflicting demands made by global capital and the population of South Africa on a weakened state structure.
