Abstract
The role of value systems in the study of ethical motivation is a neglected area of research, partly due to an absence of typologies which classify entire value systems. In this article, a theoretical typology of four ethical value system types is created by placing Rokeach's value types onto a matrix. Individuals exhibiting each value system type are identified through a scoring system supported by a cluster analysis. Studies testing this typology indicate that subjects describe themselves on personal inventories for Machiavellianism and narcissism consistently with predictions derived from the value system model. Subjects also were able reliably to associate these four value system types with the perceived ethical behavior of well-known individuals.
