Abstract
This article portrays the approach to educational leadership of a highly effective African American public high school principal in a major northeastern inner city. The under-standing of her work that is presented is based on the author's observations and interviews of the principal, her associates, and constituents and the manner in which this principal forged a partnership with the author. The portrait presents both the philosophy of her leadership as she articulated it and important aspects of her approach about which she was not explicit. The principal's references to herself as a "teamplayer " "uplifter," "link to the past, " and one who influences by example, are presented as the cornerstones of her method.
