A government research organization was experiencing dysfunctional conflict within and between divisions. In an attempt to reduce conflict and improve performance, a change strategy was implemented. Four work units were restructured so that one person in each unit performed an integrative role for that unit. Each unit's performance before and after introduction of the integrator was analyzed. The productivity of the integrated units improved during the 2-year observation period and was significantly higher than that of comparison groups.
