Abstract
ONE is an urban community of artists, crafts-people, and professionals living and working in a warehouse reconstructed by the participants. The community is characterized by the integration of working and living; sharing of tools, skills, and resources; utilization of industrial surplus; avoidance of hierarchies of authority and responsibility; decision making by consensus; measuring value in terms of energy rather than cash; an orientation to process rather than end goals; and an effort by participants to regain control over their lives by shaping their own physical, organizational, and social environments.
