On the shortcomings of the compartmented clepsydra, we have a recent article by MillsA. A., “The mercury clock of the Libros del saber”, Annals of science, xlv (1988), 329–44, who used the same investigative technique as that employed by Combridge with the Su Sung memoir; that is, he built a machine to the Alfonsine schema and tested its performance.
