The most important North American repositories are the Lick Observatory Archives and the Harvard University Archives.

The David Dunlap Observatory of the University of Toronto has retained its files from the 1930s and 1940s, but has stored them unsorted in boxes. These may soon be transferred to the University of Toronto Archives for arranging and cataloguing.

The Annual Reports of the Canadian government observatories before Confederation (1867 ) are found in the Journals of the Legislative Assembly , and afterward in the reports of the Minister of Marine and Fisheries (to the late 1880s ) and the Minister of Interior. These reports include scientific material as well as organizational and administrative.
