As an interesting aside, one potentially interesting consequence of studying this material on microfilm (in contrast to studying the originals) is that the backs of the pages of notes are given equal weight to the notes themselves so it is possible to see what passes for scrap paper in the Herschel household at the time. From this it is possible to see a whole range of interests not formally recorded by the family including evidence of their investments, invitations to parties and lectures, and certain of their less prestigious correspondence.
