Abstract
Theologies depend on philosophies. Vatican II introduced the Church as sacrament. Although the Council followed no theologian, that idea was proposed variously by the preconciliar Schillebeeckx, Rahner, and Semmelroth. Each theory manifests weaknesses and strengths, complementing each other in addressing human freedom. This emphasis accords with John Paul II's thought.
