Abstract
In this review article, Lionel Gossman, Emeritus Professor of Romance Languages and Literatures at Princeton University and author of the highly acclaimed study, Basel in the Age of Burckhardt (Chicago and London: The University of Chicago Press, 2000), reflects on the significance, not just for theology but for general intellectual and cultural history, of Franz Overbeck's classic text of 1873: Ueber die Christlichkeit unserer heutigen Theologie, now available in a new English translation by Martin Henry.1
