Abstract
That religion has many strands and contradictory features is becoming ever more apparent. Keeping up with its 'new visibility' in different contexts is now a central task of the sociology of religion. Another challenge is careful analysis of the phenomenon, and avoiding simplistic or reductionist explanations. This survey looks mainly at the work of the British school. An interesting feature is the new relaxed openness of much of this sociology to theological perspectives.
