Abstract
The author reviews the development of the concept of atonement, and points out the strengths and weaknesses of the various stances. He points out that these theories are shaped by their respective cultures, and that our concept of atonement is affected by a myriad of other concepts that are philosophically loaded and culturally relative. Any contemporary theory must take this into account and ensure the base concepts are compatible with Christianity.
