Abstract
Catholic Social Teaching, according to Schuck, should include the papal encyclicals issued before as well as after Rerum Novarum. Viewed from this perspective, the Church's social doctrine is seen to be part of a particular theological framework and to be based on a communitarian ethic normally neglected by commentators. How persuasive is this claim?
