Abstract
What constitutes 'popular religion'? This study seeks to show that, at least with regard to the laity in late medieval Gaelic Ireland, not only does what could be regarded as superstition often have its roots in orthodox Christianity (not paganism), but, more generally, the supposed dividing line between the official 'orthodox' élite and the 'superstitious' rest is untenable.
