Abstract
Merton's Journals, recently released twenty five years after his death, give us a unique insight into the mind and heart of one of the most popular spiritual writers of the twentieth century. A close reading of Merton's writings in the light of the Journals enables the author to throw a critical but basically sympathetic eye on the tortured life, literary achievement, and political leanings of the American monk, poet, and spiritual writer.
