Abstract
Exegesis of Matt 13:24–43, 18:23–35, and 25:31–46 reveals themes common to all the Gospels: divine mercy preceding judgment, moral responsibility within the church, and dependable yet surprising justice. This essay considers Matthew’s flamboyant imagery, contemporary skittishness with God as judge, and the place of reconciliation in a theology permitting eternal punishment.
