Abstract
This essay explores how artists have used biblical themes and characters to convey the universal experiences of trauma, anguish, and suffering. In following or subverting standard iconographical conventions, they produced works of stunning originality that encourage the viewer to engage with the biblical texts they depicted in original and creative ways.
