[The present paper tries to examine some of the basic assumptions related to the changing trends in residential care, with reference to its applicability to a few institu tions in Greater Bombay. Observational visits to a couple of child care institutions and discussions with the Sugeriatendents/Directors/Secretaries were the 'Modus Operandi' adopted by the researcher to collect the necessary information. The changing trends in residential care are analysed in terms of the functions, caring pattern and rehabilitatian system prevalent in each institution. The paper concludes with a few suggestions drawn from the researcher's experience and the available data).
