An attempt is made to demonstrate that role conflict is an integral and important part of the psychiatric residency. As suggested, role conflict leads to ineffectivenes and may be one variable, among others, of the stress psychiatric residents must cope with during their train ing. Suggestions are provided for approaching role conflict from an educational perspective, thereby diminishing the emotional impact, and hopefully enhance the learning process during the residency.
