The paper presents a new formulation of the narrow-band digital angle modulation problem. The direct modelling approach, in terms of angles or frequencies, yields maximum likelihood detectors. Using a not widely known asymptotic expression for the noise instantaneous frequency, a lower bound for the probability of error of binary FSK is obtained.
