Background theory and constructional details of a simple laboratory experiment that combines aspects of optical fibre transmission and pulse width modulation are presented. The experiment is suitable for inclusion in both undergraduate and post-graduate communications teaching laboratories, depending upon the depth of analytical treatment in accompanying text.
