The step-function approximation of the magnetisation characteristic is used systematically to develop equations describing direct resistance heating of a steel bar. The equations for the inductively heated thick plate follow as a limiting case. Sinusoidal applied current (field) or sinusoidal applied voltage conditions are considered.
