The paper presents an analysis of torque production in a synchronous motor with constant-current supply under highly-saturated conditions, using the Frohlich approximation to represent the magnetisation characteristic. Attention is focussed upon conditions for optimum torque production. It is shown that the torque angle at maximum torque can significantly exceed 90°. Computations are compared with test results.
