Abstract
In 1978, on the occasion of the Institute's fiftieth anniversary, J.L. Granatstein was asked to look at the International Journal's first year. For this issue, celebrating the Journal's fiftieth volume, he was invited to add an epilogue commenting on the evolution of the Journal over the succeeding decades. The first three sections of this article are reprinted from the winter 1997–8 issue; the fourth section was written especially for this issue. In the fifth section the current editors of the Journal respond to some of the points raised by Professor Granatstein.
