Abstract
Recent developments in various types of gas sensing devices are examined and the advantages and disadvantages of currently available sensors in relation to the various application areas are summarized. Possible directions of future development are identified and discussed. The trends in the ways that sensors are utilized and the possible impact of new developments in a number of application areas are considered.
