Abstract
The applicational requirements of sensors for the industrial market are discussed. The advantages and disadvantages of fibre optic industrial sensors are reviewed against these requirements and against the competitive advantages of electronic sensors. It is concluded that the high performance and sensitivity of some fibre optic sensors will favour their acceptance in the market place as discrete devices. Their future in large sensor systems for the process control industry seems less assured. Battery assisted sensors may provide an interim solution.
