Abstract
The paper discusses the programme of space exploration to be undertaken by the Space Shuttle Transportation System which is currently being developed by NASA. The basic parameters of Space Shuttle are identified and the major subsystems contributing to the shuttle are reviewed. The instrumentation-needs, and the constraints applying to it, are addressed; the paper concluding with a brief reference to the potentials of technical spin-off from this momentous programme.
