Abstract
An instrument has been developed for the measurement of the local ac magnetostriction of laminations of transformer steel subjected to 50 Hz excitation. The instrument has two ceramic displacement transducers and is capable of measuring ac displacement in the range 10−4 − 10−8 in. The instrument works in a localised field generated by a C-core electromagnet. A comparison is made between the uniform field produced by a large coil and the local field produced by the electromagnet. A measurement of magnetostrictive strain coefficient in stressed conditions of the lamination under both uniform and local field conditions has also been made using two materials.
