Abstract
Particulate emission from the combustion of fuel must be monitored by two types of instrument. The fine end of the spectrum, which causes visibility problems in the atmosphere, can be checked by smoke recorders. The inherent inaccuracies of these instruments can be greatly reduced by the use of a steel tube to maintain alignment, by the use of Everclean Windows, and by the automatic use of purging air to record the effective instrument zero (British Patent Application No. 44785/69). The coarse end of the spectrum, which tends to pollute surfaces at ground level, can be checked by the CERL Flue Dust Monitor which is particularly sensitive to the coarser dust. This instrument has been made extremely simple and reliable by intensive development. It is particularly suitable for checking the performance of electrostatic precipitators.
