A steady-state model of a side-fired steam reforming furnace is formulated. Both a grey gas radiation and a single-band radiation treatment of the furnace are given, and an estimate of the convection term is included. The model compares very favourably with available plant data, and indicates the validity of the assumption that the furnace gases are well-mixed. The structure of the dynamic model of the reformer and the engineering approximations used to simplify the equations are re-examined.
