Abstract
The Road Research Laboratory is using a Marconi Myriad digital computer to control 81 traffic signals in the centre of Glasgow. This paper is concerned to pass on experience of operations programming for the benefit of workers with computer systems software. It is not a comprehensive account of the Glasgow Experiment.
The executive program “Monitor” was developed specifically for this particular application and a general description of it is given. Brief descriptions of some of the types of operations carried out by other routines are also given. All programs were written in symbolic assembly language.
The paper describes some of the methods used to test the program, including hardware devices which have proved useful. Some general comments on the advantages and disadvantages of the methods adopted are given.
