Abstract
This paper describes some work done in implementing computer control algorithms on the six plate pilot-scale distillation column at the NPL. The method of algorithm design due to Ziegler and Nichols was used on the column for regulation and set-point change control, and these results were compared with those obtained from using an algorithm designed using a method based on the z transform. This latter method requires knowledge of the plant z transfer function and the method is a logical application of various constraints and rules that have been in the literature for some time.
