Abstract

Charity Presentation by the East of Scotland Section
The amount raised (2880.00) from last year’s annual dinner was for the charity, Raising Hope for Tilly. Unfortunately, Tilly, who suffered from diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), a rare brain tumour, has now passed away. The money raised will be put into a trust in her name which has been set up to help other DIPG suffers find treatments.
In the photo (from left to right) is: Graham Taylor (EoSS Treasurer), John Owens (EoSS Chairman), Nicola Hardy, Kevin Beattie (EoSS Events Coordinator) and Chris Baker (EoSS Secretary).
Teesside on Target
Pictured are members of the Teesside Section and their guests following an evening shooting (or in some cases attempting to shoot) clay pigeons traversing the area on a variety of trajectories. Marksman of the evening, not for the first time and by the narrow margin of just one hit, was the Teesside Technical Events Coordinator Colin Mather. A warm summer evening spent in a delightful setting with friends and good food – a most enjoyable event.
West Cumbria Big Bang Fair 2017
Recently, two of our members took part in the West Cumbria Big Bang Fair 2017 at St Bees. A total of 26 companies and institutes took part using experiments to demonstrate to school children the varying aspects of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths).
Over 600 pupils from local primary and secondary schools attended the event.
The local section showed the children two experiments.
The first used a demonstration of a Radioactive Contamination Detection simulator (kindly borrowed from Sellafield Ltd) which, using oil-based simulant, showed how instruments can detect things that human senses cannot.
The second experiment involved the children blowing down two hose pipes mounted in a 1-m-high water column. The first located at the top and the second at the bottom. This showed how much more pressure is required to force air out of a tube deep under water, and it was explained how this principle allows us to determine liquor levels using a pressure sensor.
Pictured above – David Jones (L) and Grant Hodgson (R) – both members of the West Cumbria Branch.
