Abstract

The Presidential Lecture and Learned Awards Evening was held on 30 October 2013 at the Worshipful Company of Scientific Instrument Makers, London. Over 60 institute members and guests attended to hear InstMC President Lord Oxburgh’s thought-provoking address, ‘Numbers and our energy supply – will we be able to keep the lights on?’ He talked about the energy supply situation in the United Kingdom.
A memorable part of the evening was the presentation of the Tallantire Award to Professor Percy Hammond for his exceptional commitment and service to the aims and objectives of the institute. Dr Gwyn Llewellyn was commended with an Honorary Fellowship for his 35 years of participation in the institute’s affairs which includes his involvement with its Local Sections and its activities for qualifying individuals as professionals.
The awards and medals were presented to a group of extraordinary recipients. The Sir Harold Hartley Medal was bestowed upon Professor Isobel Pollock for her outstanding contribution to the technology of measurement and control. Sir David McMurtry was recognised with the Callendar Medal for his considerable contribution to the art of instruments and measurement. The Honeywell International Medal for distinguished work on control in any sphere was awarded to Martin Ward. The Alec Hough-Grassby Memorial Award was presented to Alan Turnbull for his significant contribution to process analysis and environmental monitoring. Congratulations to George Ellison for receiving The L.B. Lambert Diploma in appreciation of meritorious service to the institute.
The Honeywell Prize was awarded to Professor Michael Butterfield for his article ‘Pennies dropping Part I and Part II’ in Measurement+Control (vol. 45/1 February 2012). S. He, H.J. Cooper, D.G. Ward, X.Yao and J.K. Heath won the ICI Prize for best paper in the Transactions (August 2012) on ‘Analysis of premalignant pancreatic cancer mass spectrometry data for biomarker selection using a group search optimizer’.
