Two unusual, community-acquired gram-negative bacillary infections, Citrobacter diversus spinal epidural abscess and primary lung abscess, document the ever-widening spectrum of organisms causing community-acquired infection. The infec- tions were unusual because Citrobacter diversus has only rarely been implicated in disease outside the urinary tract, the infections occurred in relatively unexpected sites for gram-negative bacilli, and they occurred in the community setting.
