The peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) is a good index of the severity of airflow obstruction. PEFR can easily be measured by a relatively inexpensive, portable, simple instrument that requires almost no training to use. Serial measurements of PEFR should be regarded as an essential part of the management of patients with severe airflow obstruction.
