Abstract
The high rate of infection in implant surgery has led a group of McGill medical researchers to investigate the source of the bacteria which cause the infection and to develop means to prevent the occurrence of infection. Working on the premise that the surgical team is a prime source of organisms, they are in the process of developing an operating room garment which would be connected to a suction system. The suction apparatus would draw off organisms originating from the skin and respiratory tracts of the members of the surgical team, thus preventing them from entering the air in the operating room and possibly penetrating the surgical incision and causing infection.
