A psychophysical approach utilizing ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) was used to assess endurance in performing strenuous work. First, each subject was tested to determine the peak workload. Maximum aerobic power and RPE's were measured. Then, the subjects worked at various rates on a treadmill. Regression equations were developed from which point estimates of maximum working time at each level of work were determined.
