Abstract
A 6-week biotechnology clerkship program sponsored by Immunex Corporation is described. The expansion of the biotechnology industry coupled with the rapid acceptance of biotechnology-derived products in routine medical care has led to the need to incorporate biotechnology education programs into the pharmacy curriculum. During a competency-based program, students gain experience in areas throughout the company, including professional services, regulatory affairs, pharmacoeconomics, manufacturing, marketing and marketing research, sales training, quality assurance, and the legal department. Successful completion of the program requires that students demonstrate predefined competencies. Students who meet competencies in less than the allotted time are encouraged to obtain experience outside the program description. The clerkship has been overwhelmingly successful, and other biotechnology companies are encouraged to offer similar programs.
