IN NEPAL, the majority of the adult population smokes, but although there is at present a considerable incidence of smoking-related disease, it is small in comparison with the problems of infectious diseases and overpopulation. Smoking is increasing in Nepal and will soon present a major health problem if action is not taken. European forms of health education are not appropriate to the illiterate rural population. Government control of cigarette production and tar levels is proposed.
