ESTIMATES of the size of the hypothermia problem have varied considerably over the years; from the hundred or so deaths noted by the Registrar General, to over 20,000 deaths annually (Taylor 1964). Nor does this take into account the non-fatal instances of hypothermia. A Committee of the Royal College of Physicians (1966) estimated that in a three-month winter period there could be 9,000 hospital admissions for hypothermia (rectal temperature < 35°C).
