The referendum item asked: "Shall the public water supply for domestic use in this city be fluoridated ?" It is doubtful that confusion or misreading of the wording contributed to the results in Table 1.

There is apparently some doubt about the incorrectness of this statement but pro-fluoridation leaders in Cambridge made no claims of efficacy after the permanent enamel has been formed. For practical purposes, those who were reasonably well-informed about fluoridation would have rejected this statement as untrue in November, 1959.
