Abstract
This article analyses the results of four exploratory group interviews with girls of Turkish, Surinamese and indigenous Dutch ethnic backgrounds. The groups watched a constructed episode of the Dutch soap opera Geode Tijden, Slechte Tijden (Good Times, Bad Times), in which relational conflicts between parents and children were the central theme. The results show that the girls compared situations in the episode to their own lives and also referred to primordial `life values'. They actively negotiated with each other about what they would have done in a similar situation and what would have been the best way to behave. There were remarkable similarities across ethnic groups.
