Austin Farrer, Faith and Speculation: An Essay in Philosophical Theology ( T&T Clark, 1988, first published 1967). For those who relish Farrer's peerless style there is much to ponder in the central chapters (IV, V, & VI) of this book.

Timothy Gorringe, God's Theatre: A Theology of Providence (SCM, 1991). An effective attempt to develop and explore the metaphor of God as the director of the play of existence.
