Abstract
The present article seeks to transcend the terms of the traditional debate over the date and authenticity of the Ignatian letters by showing that Ignatius knew the writings of the Gnostic Ptolemaeus. Since Eusebius' dating of Ignatius to the reign of Trajan (98—117) cannot be regarded as authoritative, it is suggested that the letters were probably written in the 140s.
