The purpose of this study was to evaluate visual perceptual skills of beginning readers. Greek and English trigrams were presented tachistoscopically to deaf and normally hearing children to test their ability to recognize single symbols and recall trigrams. The performance of the 2 groups of children was essentially the same on recognition tasks but the normally hearing children performed significantly better on the recall task. The results suggest different processing strategies by the 2 groups of children.
